Our heritage

Founded in 1919 by two Royal Engineers who had created the pillboxes used on the Western Front in the First World War, Bison Precast has come a long way. Throughout our history, we have built innovation and passion into every component while delivering speed, strength and quality to the industry sectors we’ve come to know and understand. It’s a past we’re proud of and one which provides a solid foundation for our future.

100 years of history

1919 concrete limited formed

In 1919, two ex-Royal Engineers, JG Ambrose and CB Mathews formed a company called Concrete Limited.

1935 invention of the pneumatic core

The invention and worldwide patent of the pneumatic core revolutionised the manufacture of hollow concrete floors.

1940 the Bison mobile pillbox

The extemporised armoured fighting vehicle, the Bison, also known as the mobile pillbox, was produced in Britain during the invasion crisis of 1940-1941.

1945 rebuilding post-war Britain

After the Second World War the company was contracted to aid in the rebuilding of factories, hospitals and government facilities that had suffered war damage.

1960 HRH Duke of Edinburgh visits Bison

28th October 1960 was an historic day for everyone at the Hounslow works when His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip visited the site.

1967 Wall Frame system and Queen's award

Wall Frame, the first fully industrialised all British system for high rise blocks of flats was introduced and subsequently awarded the Queen's Award to Industry.

1974 Bison Beam floors developed

1974 saw the development of the Bison Beam to fulfil changes in market needs and mandatory requirements for ground floors.

1999 The Cardiff Millennium Stadium

From 1998 until its completion in 1999, Bison supplied 1000m3 of terraces, walls and beams, and 45,000m2 of hollowcore flooring.<

2003 New Wembley National Stadium

Bison Precast supplied ancillary steps, walls and stairflights as well as over 90,000m2 of hollowcore flooring and over 13,000m3 of precast concrete for the 54km of terracing.

2005 New Swadlincote production facility

In 2005, to enable future expansion, the construction of a new £32 million state-of-the-art production facility at Swadlincote, Derbyshire, was completed.

2017 Bison aquisition doubles production

Bison joined Forterra following a £20m aquisition which will see the company grow as a leading UK precast concrete manufacturer.

2019 A centenary of product innovation

Since 1919, Bison Precast has been responsible for an array of iconic structures, from wartime pillboxes to the terraces of Old Trafford and the new Wembley Stadium.

Today, Bison Precast is one of the most recognised names in construction. It is a leading UK manufacturer of concrete and is Britain’s largest producer of precast flooring. Its expertise and pioneering techniques are at the forefront of offsite construction, providing precast frame solutions that are reducing build times, improving health and safety, and helping alleviate issues of labour availability.

Unhindered by weather or labour shortages, it means you are able to realise cheaper, faster and safer builds.

Bison Precast products and façades are BES Responsible Sourcing Certified and are manufactured in accordance with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. As well as being manufactured efficiently, they also have a long, low-maintenance service life. Our precast components are CE marked against BS EN 1168.
