Case study University College London Hospital (UCLH)

Bison Precast concrete products were specified by Bouygues UK in the design and build of a new state-of-the-art hospital in central London, dedicated to advanced cancer treatment and surgery services. Designed by Scott Tallon Walker in association with Edward Williams Architects, the treatment centre is one of the first facilities of its kind in the UK.

The new hospital facility is located underground with five additional floors above ground offering care and treatment of blood cancer and short stay surgery. The underground element of the project included the excavation of 25 metres of earth as well as the installation of the latest proton beam therapy equipment – weighing around 120 tonnes per gantry.

Bison Precast was appointed to supply 85 reinforced concrete precast radiation shield beams that would form part of the ceiling above the proton beam equipment. The beams were laid in two tiers, each element weighing approximately 19 tonnes. Deliveries for the project commenced in June 2018.

The project was shortlisted in the Public Sector Project – Design Stage category of the BREEAM Awards in 2019.
