Case study Hatch Farm Dairies

As part of efforts to optimise the UK’s flood alleviation, Bison Precast’s team has designed, manufactured and supplied over 1,400 tonnes of box culverts to mitigate water in the land at Hatch Farm Dairies, Winnersh, near the River Loddon.

The site, which is being developed as part of a scheme for more than 400 new homes, will include an essential link road on an embankment, providing a dry route between Winnersh and Reading at times of flooding when other roads are closed.

The new homes will lie above and beyond the River Loddon flood plain. Extensive sustainable drainage measures such as these will mitigate the additional surface run-off and deal with any flooding event.

Tony Tyas, buyer for construction experts Hope and Clay, said, “As part of the local flood mitigation plan, our clients required a purpose-built box culvert system for this location, as the surrounding water table called for a system that would control the flow of water beneath the link road.

The specialist precast team, based at the facility in Somercotes, used their expertise to create a bespoke box culvert system for the site.

The nine banks of precast units were specified to support the holding platform of the road structure, while also controlling the water in the ground by taking it from one side of the embankment to the other and allowing it to drain away safely.
