The drainage system for a brand-new development of 374 homes in Lincoln has been designed, manufactured and supplied by Bison Precast over a period of 18 months.

Minster Fields, located to the north east of the city, required a large-scale drainage system, comprising nearly 600 precast concrete box culverts, to be installed at the site.

Bison Precast’s expert design team at the firm’s Somercotes facility created a system which takes run-off water from the entire development, channels it through control chambers and then deposits it in three large storage tanks, before it is sent to a drainage ditch alongside the nearby A46.

Steve Wright, Quantity Surveyor for construction specialists Daniel Charles, said, “This site was tricky to access in the initial stages of the installation, particularly as each of the box culverts weighed more than eight tonnes. However, the delivery and application of the units went very smoothly.”

The box culverts, which were installed in two stages between 2015 and 2016, were each two metres long and 1.2 metres wide and formed runs of around 90 metres in length out of site beneath the ground at Minster Fields. The drainage system is capable of processing almost two million litres of surface water from Minster Fields at any given time.

Steve continued, “Bison Precast were chosen for this substantial project for their efficiency and experience, and as we have worked with them before we were well aware of their professional approach to large scale installations such as this.”
