Forterra commended for health and safety at MPA awards
More than 300 delegates attended the first live Mineral Products Association conference in London since 2019 to address health and safety challenges and celebrate good working practices.
Forterra received several mentions in the Safer Production category. Nick Parkin from Hoveringham and Kevin McCarthy from Newbury both won certificates of merit for their work on confined space elimination and manual handling elimination while Daniel Parkes from the Hoveringham site received a highly commended certificate for reducing manual handling and work at height when removing stop ends. Edward Burridge and Adrian Anstee were finalists for their work on Stressing Safety Improvements.
Nicola Barron, Gemma George and the central teams, received certificates of merit for contractor control improvements and national health and safety day initiative, and were also highly commended for work on their Golden Rules Implementation under the Safer Together category. Forterra’s Mental Health and Well-Being Initiative was awarded in the Safer Through Improvements in Health and Wellbeing category and became a finalist in the Fatal 6 submission.
Employees Sharon North from the Milton site and Edward Burridge from the Hoveringham site were individually appreciated for their active work on improving health and safety.
Forterra also received a new award to this year’s event; the MPA Special award issued under the John Crabbe Trophy category for outstanding performance in health and safety. This was awarded for Forterra’s focus on health and safety culture and projects to make the workplace safer for all.
Jon Prichard, MPA Chief Executive, congratulated the award winners and thanked all those who had submitted entries: “With 150 submissions from 40 MPA member companies, we’ve seen an impressive new array of health and safety initiatives and ideas shared from every corner of the industry. Our members can be justly proud that the UK is a world leader, not just in health and safety performance but in the way it continues to share innovations and practices to keep on improving. Most important of all, I hope that everyone who attended today’s event returns to work with fresh inspiration, new ideas and better practices to implement to make their own businesses safer than ever.”
Paul Humphreys, Head of Health and Safety at Forterra added, “We take health and safety incredibly seriously at Forterra – our Golden Rules are a fundamental part of working. It’s fantastic to have the lengths we go to as a company and individual efforts recognised by MPA.”
